Unique Projects

After adding onto their home numerous times, these clients found that the original small living room had become no more than a passageway between the kitchen and dining room. The use of heavily saturated color and rich textures have balanced out the built-in bookshelves and soaring walls and the room has become a favorite 'hang-out' for the entire family. (Click to enlarge) This magnificent room began with the request from my clients that it be warm and inviting, even though the colors they needed in their environment were actually quite cool. Care also had to be taken to establish just the right amount of texture to maintain that cozy, nurturing feel and keep the room at one with the spectacular view. (Click to enlarge) This warm, cozy family room is a product of balancing the large expanse of creamy white pigmented lacquer with the natural warmth of the raw silk sofas, limestone table and unvarnished woods of floor and table. Accessories were gathered from many countries to give the room a quietly intellectual ambiance. (Click to enlarge)
Click to enlarge The statement of purpose we adopted for this room has become one of my favorite design concepts. We determined to make this room as comfortable as one of the client’s favorite old pair of Levi’s, but just as elegant and eloquent as one of her best silk blouses. To accomplish this we used a carefully laundered damask fabric to make a slipcover for the sofa over the casual plaid used for every day. Setting the furniture on an angle with a game table and chairs nestled behind the sofa welcomes family and guests. The rich cherry cabinetry received a gentle "fly specking" and was then hand rubbed for a rich patina. It was further enhanced with the use of a natural slate in plum to copper tones. (Click to enlarge) Since this room would need to accommodate several different type activities such as music lessons, study, intimate conversations and even paying the bills, we decided to make it as much like a European conservatory as possible. We added the expansive double-coved ceiling treatment and bookcase/mantle treatment. Accessories were gathered from all over Europe and the wall was treated to a custom paper titled "A Little Night Music." (Click to enlarge)
